What does Mandela mean to Costa Rica
A few days ago one of the great men that ever walked the face of the earth died - Nelson Mandela. The vast majority of us have heard at some point in our lives his name and that is not a secret. But who was Nelson Mandela? For many of us we have heard of his enigma but his full story remained somewhat of a secret. It was not until a few days ago while watching a program on the history channel that I could fully understand who he really was and the meaning of this great man and great human being - a gentle giant without bitterness and with a spirit of Justice. Now I can say that I know the meaning of his name and what it represents.
This extraordinary struggle that he defended throughout his life is something that can only be described as Nelson Mandela he who has already departed this world but whose legacy will live on forever.
The cause that Mandela fought for his whole life is something that for most of us Ticos in Costa Rica is something we consider normal in our country. Since 1949 Costa Rica has enjoyed democracy, peace, freedom and equal rights and that is something that is part of our culture and what we sometimes take for granted. The Pura Vida.

Hace unos días, uno de los grandes hombres que caminaron sobre la faz de la tierra murieron - Nelson Mandela. La gran mayoría de nosotros hemos oído en algún momento de nuestras vidas a su nombre y que no es un secreto. Pero, ¿quién era Nelson Mandela. Para muchos de nosotros hemos oído de su enigma pero su historia completa permanece un secreto. No fue sino hasta hace unos pocos días mientras se ve un programa en el canal de la historia que yo podía entender plenamente quién era en realidad y el significado de este gran hombre y gran ser humano - un gigante amable sin amargura y con un espíritu de justicia . Ahora puedo decir que conozco el significado de su nombre y lo que representa.
Esta extraordinaria lucha que defendió a lo largo de su vida es algo que sólo puede ser descrito como Nelson Mandela el que ya ha partido de este mundo , pero cuyo legado vivirá por siempre.
La causa de que Mandela luchó durante toda su vida es algo que la mayoría de nosotros "Ticos" en Costa Rica es algo que consideramos normal en nuestro país. Desde 1949 Costa Rica ha disfrutado de la democracia , la paz , la libertad y la igualdad de derechos y eso es algo que forma parte de nuestra cultura y de lo que a veces damos por sentado.
Hoy es hoy, el pasado es pasado y todo mira hacia el futuro ahora."
La muerte es algo inevitable cuando un hombre ha hecho lo que él considera, como su deber para con su pueblo y su país, puede descansar en paz. Creo que he hecho ese esfuerzo y que, por lo tanto dormiré por toda la eternidad.
